The Royal Government of Bhutan (RGoB) has significant untapped hydropower generation potential. The Power System Master Plan 2040 estimates the overall hydropower potential at 36,900 MW. In 2020, the RGoB, through the Department of Hydropower and Power Systems (DHPS) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, requested World Bank assistance to develop its human and institutional capacity by applying this renewed framework to develop specific projects. It has selected the proposed 1,125 MW Dorjilung Hydropower Project (Dorjilung HPP) as the candidate project for this purpose.
